Do writers ever retire? How would you define ‘retirement’ as a writer?

On one of the three forums I visit regularly, this one related to affiliate marketing, there’s a discussion thread started by someone everyone there respects. This person has been doing affiliate marketing more or less full-time for several years and just explained in this discussion thread that he’s selling off his websites and shutting down his affiliate marketing business to start a new full-time “off line” career.

Tip about blogging: Don’t sp*m comments; most blogs ‘nofollow’ comments

Here’s a little tip for bloggers, mostly for those who post comments on blogs; SPECIFICALLY for those of you who try to sp*m this and other blogs with idiotic comments just to get a link back to your money-making scheme or cr*p-filled website. Don’t waste your time: Most blogs run on WordPress software, which automatically makes all links in post comments into “nofollow” links.

Should you start that BIG writing project? Why not?

My wife and I had a long talk over the weekend (or earlier this week, maybe?) about our future. I’ll say up front, we are both in our early-to-mid-60s, not necessarily “too old,” but certainly pushing the envelope for something like starting a brand new career.

Beware of jargon in your writing; use only as needed

It’s been awhile since I’ve mentioned “jargon,” so I thought it about time to put together a brief reminder: Avoid using jargon in your writing, except when it’s necessary.

“Jargon” may be loosely defined as language that belongs to a particular group, profession, or activity. So using it becomes necessary when you’re communicating with someone who understands the particular jargon you’re using.

Further clarification on that FTC disclosure policy

It just occurred to me that I should point you to a couple of resources you can use if you wish to create a disclosure policy for your blog or website. Take a look at mine, if you wish. It may not work for you, and it may have far more or less than you want. But it’ll give you some example of what I’m doing. You’ll find it linked to as “Privacy” in the navigation links of this website.

Online writers: Be very careful if you use testimonials

I just searched through my posts on this site, and I cannot find anything related to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) guidelines that were issued a few months ago about bloggers and others who use customer testimonials on their websites.

Another ‘plug’ for Keyword Academy as a great resource

I posted here a few days ago about The Keyword Academy and urged anyone interested in learning about ways of building websites and online writing to check it out. (If you’re interested, check out the “We Recommend” box on the top of the right-hand sidebar on every page of this website.)

Establish your writing priorities; restablish them when you stray

I have to confess that I’ve spent most of my writing life in a sort of tension between “wannabe” and “gottabe.” I’ve always told myself I want to be successful as a novelist. But most of my writing life has been taken up with writing I’ve had to do in order to pay the bills.

Have I mentioned ‘The Keyword Academy’ for making money writing online?

It occurs to me that I may never have mentioned The Keyword Academy to my faithful followers here as a terrific site to learn about making money by writing website and blog content. (You’ll find the same link in that last sentence that you’ll find at the top of the right-hand column [sidebar] of each page on my site here.)

The more I learn about insurance, the less I like what I find

I wrote a recent article here about insurance, especially health insurance for freelancers, and even invited comments from anyone who’s found a good, reasonably cheap resource for such insurance.

We’ve recently, in my household, begun looking at the many ins and outs and options of Medicare. Yes, the years are rushing by and my wife, not ME, is approaching Medicare age in the next six months or so. What we’ve learned already is this: It’s much easier to find simple, cheap life insurance rates than to find anything resembling easy, SIMPLE answers to health insurance for Medicare clients.
