And although I’ve never had the pleasure of meeting the lady, I understand from what I’ve read that she really should know about such things: She and her novelist husband, Michael J. Sullivan, have both published via Kindle and hence have detailed experiences of their own to draw on.

One of the most useful writing exercises, and certainly one of the simplest, is to look at a story or news article — look online, check your local newspaper, try your favorite magazine, etc. — and simply ask yourself, “what if …” then fill in the blank.

Even if you just write a little bit, do it every day. And if you have time and inclination to write a lot, then hit it hard every day and hooray for you.

I am fortunate enough at this point in my life to be able to tack together enough income between Social Security Benefits (yes, I really am getting old), my wife’s income, and the stuff I do online that I currently have no day job. That’s both a blessing and a curse: We don’t have much flexibility in our income and budget, and I’m not the most self-disciplined person in the world when it comes to working.

We’ve been going through sort of a double-whammy of family crises the last week or so, but things are getting better. It becomes very hard for me to concentrate on any serious writing projects with such distractions, so I suppose my head has turned away from my writing right now and toward the marketing. But it really is all related anyway, since my online work focuses both on writing and marketing.

(My long ago undergraduate degree was from a Bible college.) The assignments they gave me, mostly carefully defined as to length and content, were such things as Sunday school quarterlies and daily Bible-based devotionals.
