All right, for all you computer geeks and mini-geeks out there, I just read a newsletter article about “Gyy,” perhaps a pioneer in the next generation of laptop and other portable computers for writers. Take a look at the article in the link above. If you know Spanish and want to get more information, there’s a link at the end of the newsletter article to the Spanish website that’s home of Gyy’s parent company.

I posted yesterday about a freelance article writing offer for which I received email. You can reread that post. In summary, the appeal was for someone who would write 10 articles, each article 750 words long. The person wanted the 10 articles split up with two each into five topics, which he described briefly. The appeal also said the articles were needed the next day.

(EDITOR’S NOTE: This original post, made before the website crash I reference elsewhere, generated some interesting detailed comments. Unfortunately, I was not able to salvage the original comments, so I certainly encourage those of you who commented to come back and share your thinking on this again.)

Have you ever thought about what “day jobs,” i.e., full-time work and/or careers, produce the best conditions for writers?
If you look at best-selling fiction writers, you’ll easily see that several of the most successful novelists are/were lawyers, doctors and others in health care jobs, teachers, and a few journalists.

I was reminded again today of the major problem many freelancers face regarding insurance. I’m a case in point, as I probably mentioned before. Although my wife has decent health insurance coverage as part of an early retirement package she took some years back, I do NOT have any health insurance coverage, and because of a little snafu on our part, I cannot get on my wife’s policy.

I saw this interview with John Grisham on “Today” yesterday and I thought you’d enjoy a look yourself. There were some interesting things about Grisham’s writing and his creative process.
Go take a look at the interview for yourself, using the link above to the “Today” website and video. I have no idea how long they keep those videos up, so if you want to see it you might want to look at it soon.

For most of us, winter time means a time to be prepared for weather problems, power outages, and other seasonal woes. (Maybe you live in a land without winter, but I’ll bet most of you understand snow storms, ice storms, torrential downpours, and other winter weather delights.)

Open question to all of you bloggers who are reading this: Do you use WordPress? If not, what blogging/website building software DO you use?
If you’ve been blogging or building any sort of websites, Internet presence, etc., you at least must have heard about WordPress blogging software. I cannot remember when I first started blogging, but I do remember that I’ve always used WordPress software. (I’m not talking about one of the free blogging accounts you can find at WordPress.com. I’m talking about the free software you can download from WordPress.org and install for yourself.)

All right. I’m ready to make a sort of “preliminary” public announcement here: I’m writing my fingers down to little stubs this week and hope by next week to offer some Squidoo lenses for sale.

If your writing involves writing content for a website, and especially if it involves writing content for an affiliate marketing website, I assume you understand the need for early planning and preparation related to the annual shopping holiday — I mean, related to Christmas.

I’m pretty good at following directions, I think. My wife could probably judge that better than I, but I really don’t believe I fit that old stereotype of men who are unwilling to ask for or follow directions. In fact, when we’re traveling I generally love to have a map or road atlas along and check it frequently.

What’s the most interesting writing or writing related job you’ve ever held? What’s the worst or the least interesting writing or writing related job you’ve ever held?
I ask those questions because I want a better idea of the experiences and interests of you, my good readers. I originally started this little gathering on the Internet hoping to share some of the writing experiences and writing knowledge I have with people interested in knowing it. I can only do that effectively as I get feedback from all of you out there.

If you think of bad writing, sloppy writing, careless writing — whatever — as the blemish on the face of the publishing world, then copy editors would be the “acne treatments” that try to heal or at least “pretty up” that blemish.

You cannot watch television, read a magazine, do ANYTHING on the Internet, or even just take a walk around most towns without being bombarded by words and their meanings — words and meanings that shape the way we actually see and regard the world we live in.
